Bedroom

People often assume that it is difficult to make a bedroom less damaging to the environment. There are however, a few simple steps you can take.

Furniture

Invest in bedroom furniture made from sustainable sources. Look out for companies who are registered with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an organization which certifies  furniture as being eco-friendly. The FSC closely monitors the harvesting and re-planting processes of the lumber companies who cut down the trees used for sustainable furniture.

Aspect and layout

The positioning of the bedroom within your house will influence how much sun and thus heat it will receive throughout the year. In the winter months, this could help reduce the need for expensive central heating. Rooms which benefit from evening sun are ideal as bedrooms. Think about the positioning of your furniture to make the most of this sunlight.

Bed Linen

The conventional methods and techniques used in the manufacture of bed linen and mattresses are very environmentally unfriendly. Therefore wherever you can, you should look for organic alternatives such as organic cotton. Organic bed linen is produced from sustainable sources and does not use toxic processes or dyes. Organic cotton sheeting is widely available from many retailers. Not only will using organic materials benefit the environment but studies have also shown that they have health benefits too.

Decorating

When decorating your bedroom, bear in mind that the materials you select could have a negative impact on the environment. Steer clear of paints which contain VOC compounds, as these are harmful to the atmosphere (and your health). If fitting a new carpet, look for ranges which are made from natural fibres. If you’re feeling really experimental, consider the use of bamboo flooring instead, and avoid using a hoover permanently!
