Sports

Many people love going to the outdoors to participate in outward bound sports such as walking, climbing, fell running, orienteering etc. The sheer number of people who (quite rightly) want to take advantage of the beautiful and varied countryside which Great Britain has puts a lot of pressure on the fragile environmental architecture of these areas.

1. Dont stop going…….

Traveling into and being outdoors is the best way of firing your green passions and will provide a spring board to doing other things and making small changes to have a greener life.

2. Travel

If possible try and use public transport to get to your destinations.

3. Support the pressure groups /  governing bodies

Groups such as Surfers against Sewage and the British Mountaineering Council actively campaign for better managed outdoor environments.

Here is some information about the some of the most popular outdoor activities:-

Walking

Walking is one of the most natural activities you can do.  It is enjoyable, takes you into some fantastic and varied scenery and can be enjoyed by many different people at whatever level. There are lots tpes of walking from strolling around your local park to blasting up monroes in Scotland. As well as good for the environment (whenever you are not in your car is good!) walking has been proven to be highly beneficial to your health. Scientists have even correlated regular walking to life longevity. As well as being an enjoyable activity walking can also be used as the most basic form of transport. This sounds a little strange but many people do work within walkable distance of their homes yet use the car everyday. Try walking a couple of days a week. Not only will this be good for the environment but your car will get to have a couple of the dreaded ‘short journey on a cold engine’ which are not good for your engine.
