Parts of Cornwall were battered last night as gale force winds and heavy rains lead to flooding across several parts of Cornwall.
People were trapped in homes and vehicles and at least one bridge is thought to be on the verge of collapse. In less serious but equally disruptive events, trains have been delayed or cancelled and roads and some schools have been closed.
So far no deaths or serious injuries have been reported, however the police and other emergency services are treating the floods as a major incident and several people have had to be rescued from buildings or cars. Several buildings and businesses have been damaged by the flooding. Many people have been surprised and caught out by the speed at which flood waters have risen.
As well as the emergency services, the Environment Agency has responded, and as well as warning people about the dangers of the flood risks has deployed teams to assess flood defences and the likelihood of future flooding. They are also working with the emergency services to help with the recovery process.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has also become involved helping to evacuate affected or at risk residents in coastal communities. All of the counties major roads have been affected.
