Sustainable Communities
The Sustainable Communities plan was launched on the 5 February 2003 with the aim of implementing a long term plan of action to develop sustainable communities both in rural and urban areas. Key areas to be tackled were the quality of open space and house demand issues. The Sustainable Communities plan also spearheaded a new approach to how and what housing is built with the emphasis on sustainable design.
In the UK a sustainable community can be defined as one which has intentionally been designed to provide sustainable living through planning, building and modification. Sustainable community defnitions are usually associated with environmental sustainability but it is important that sustainability also applies to economic issues as well as development of local infrastructure.

The people who have adopted this type of communities always try and implement methods to make their surroundings and environment ecologically safe. They find methods to reduce the emission of carbon and its wastes by minimising the consumption of different modes of transportation. They also find eco friendly methods to cook and preserve food and cuisines. This class of community always construct homes and buildings near nature friendly areas. They plant many trees and plants in their gardens and surroundings. They also find steps to conserve rain water by installing up retention cisterns and these cisterns are capable of storing and preserving rain water for a longer period of time. These communities also try to consume less electricity by adopting solar and wind power generation methods. Thus they help in conserving the natural resources. The sustainable community people appreciate and encourage the recycling methods of sewage wastes, bio wastes etc. They adopt the simple method of transportation like cycling and promote the use of bikes and cars which works on rechargeable batteries, bio fuels and even solar energy. They install many solar panels on their roof tops which collect a good amount of solar energy from the sun light and charge the photo voltaic cells, thus these cells convert the solar energy into electrical energy. The sustainable community people conduct seminar and programme to teach the benefits and advantages of using the sustainable appliances and constructions which can fulfil their requirements for a longer period of time. |
